And although meal time was quiet and orderly, he did learn to regularly feed us brinner (breakfast for dinner). I have come to realize that the running T-shirts he gives us after marathons are his way of showing he cares. And while I have only seen him cry once (during â€Å"Apollo 13†), I have helped him loosen his tie a little. The most important thing I have realized is that there is more to him than work and order. Life after my moms death has been a struggle of the heart, as I hid all those precious moments inside me, afraid the coolness of my new family would suck them away. These years have taught me to accept the unknown and what I cant change. Unlike many friends in high school, I can recognize the importance of meeting with a grandmother for lunch or calling a father at work to convey love. Although my life has been unconventional, I have grown accustomed to it. She soon figured out, however, that it was not a realistic goal. Some points that Edelman hits in the essay are the gender roles and societal expectations in parenting, being the nurturer versus being the provider, and how poor communication can ruin co-parenting. A major point that Edelman brings up in her writing are gender roles in parenting and what society expects each to do as a parent. Edelman says that coming into her parenthood she thought that if she contributed half of the families’ income, then her husband would contribute half of the housework and child caring (Edelman 284). Edelman says later that women start with huge expectations for sharing the job of parenting but almost always end up doing the majority of parental duties, which is common in society still today (Edelman 285). Another point that Edelman touches on, is the concept of being the nurturer versus being the provider of the family. This topic really ties into the previous point of gender roles and societal expectations, in that society expects the father to be the provider while the mother is generally looked at as a nurturer. Edelman’s story of her parents and the roles they played as parents when she was young attests to this statement. Although Edelman wanted so badly to achieve her aspirations of co-parenting, with the hours that her husband John worked, however, it was nearly impossible. Soon Edelman accepted the role of nurturer while John was the provider until his company was off the ground and stabilized (Edelman 289). A final point that Edelman touches on is how poor communication made things much more difficult to achieve successful co-parenting. Edelman says that her husband was hardly ever at home, and that one week he logged unofficially ninety-two hours of work (Edelman 283). The way Edelman puts it is that, â€Å"There was no time together for anything other than the most pragmatic exchanges† (Edelman 286). She said that when her husband got home from work the first thing she did was jump up with something to approve, sign, or examine (Edelman 286). This compacted conversation Hope and John were having on a nightly basis was not healthy for them at all. Edelman says that she was mostly mad at John because he never said exactly what was involved when starting his own company (Edelman 287). This anger translated into regret for Hope, saying that she would have never seen herself picking up that much household slack before her and John were married (Edelman 287). This lack of communication kept snowballing until they just stopped arguing in front of each other, and instead started taking small jabs at each other that started to add up after a while (Edelman 287). The jabs included things like buying their daughter something the other didn’t want them to have, or not doing a task the other one asked them to do, small things that added on and after a while (Edelman 288). Eventually, however, John’s company stabilized and with that came fewer hours John needed to work, and with that came the stability of their household and marriage (Edelman 289). Edelman says that it has taken a lot for her to give up her dream of co-parenting, but that she has learned to live with the imbalance and inequality of duties in their household (Edelman 289). Edelman makes some great points throughout her essay and while I do agree with most of them, I disagree with her stance on gender roles. Edelman says that she wanted to achieve a â€Å"shared responsibility† in her household, that way the husband and wife would do the same amount of household duties while keeping their full time jobs. I disagree with her view of this; I believe that if the husband is the one working extended hours during a week, trying to provide for his family, then the wife shouldn’t feel angered or annoyed at having to pick up the extra slack around the house. The wife is generally the one in the household who is known for being the care-taker, the cleaner, the cook, etc. The husband is generally looked at as the provider for the family, the head of the household, the authority figure, and it has always been that way. I understand there are circumstances where the husband can’t find work, or they get let go and the wife has to help out. In that case, while the husband was home and the wife at work, the husband should help out around the house and pick up the motherly responsibilities. What I am trying to say is that it really doesn’t matter who does exactly what in parenting, as long as the child is taken care of, the bills are paid, and everyone is happy, then each parent has done their responsibility. The second point that Edelman hits on is the nurturer and provider topic. This topic really goes hand-in-hand with what was previously stated because society generally sees your role as a parent before you even have a child. They see the mother as the nurturer and the father as the provider. I agree with society on this topic and disagree with Edelman, who says that there should be an even distribution of the two. Like what was stated earlier I believe that the father should do his job of working to provide for the well-being of his family, while the mother raises her children and takes care of the household. The final point that is made in Edelman’s essay is that poor communication made things more difficult than they were, and that good communication would’ve probably helped. She says that John was out of the house so much that they only talked to each other for a few minutes each night and that it eventually got to the point that they didn’t even have time to argue with each other. This is a serious lack of good communication and it is toxic to a relationship. I believe that the most successful relationships are those that the spouses can communicate openly and easily with one another. I agree with Edelman that their poor communication hurt their relationship, as it does to any relationship, but it can be fixed over time as it was in John and Hope’s case. Edelman’s essay is a classic example of someone having high expectations, the expectations getting brought down to reality, and then the person having to cope with the reality now. She was living under a false assumption that co-parenting would be easily reached and maintained. When she realized it wasn’t going to work out she then tried to force it more, before finally giving in and living with the imbalance. She has found something more important than attaining a goal of co-parenting, or her husband John getting rich, she has found that her child’s happiness and raising her daughter no matter what is most important. I strongly believe that no matter what obstacles parents face, they should put their child’s happiness before anything. Parenting is not always easy, as you see here in Edelman’s essay. There are many different ways to parent a child, however; however one thing shouldn’t be different. No child has the right to not be happy and the parents should do everything to make sure that they are happy.

Justice is a civilized action or way of making someone accountable for their wrongful actions, and leaves it at that. Revenge is a selfish action that brings a person’s personal justice to one’s wrong-doer, where it can spiral into an uncontrolled cycle. Both bring consequences to one’s actions, and yet they are one in the same.According to Francis Bacon, the Colonel set up his own justice for his people through revenge. Justice is actually only mentioned once in his essay, and that is just in the first line: â€Å"Revenge is a kind of wild justice,† (597) this statement shows that revenge and justice are one in the same. They both describe each other, saying that revenge is justice. It is viewed mainly as opposites because of the content at which people think of them. When justice is thought of usually people begin to think about courts, lawyers, judges, that sort of picture.Whereas this is not the case, now law on the other hand fits a bit better. Laws are the actual rules or guidelines that must be followed or if not followed justice will take place. When focusing on the past, it won’t give time to let old wounds heal. Other wise someone who uses law heals that wound and moves on to better things. Bacon then goes on to state that the only tolerable revenge is a public one, where there is no law to follow. He uses Caesar’s death as an example, showing that because he had been murdered there was no law because it was more of a dictatorship; therefore there was no solid law in the land that could follow the assignation of him.So when people obtained revenge for Caesar’s death it restored order and law, and therefore there was no law to punish those who got revenge for Caesar’s death because it had restored order. Now the dictator in Carolyn Forcheâ⠂¬â„¢s piece, â€Å"The Colonel†, is not quite the same as Caesar was, he was a bit more on the harsh side. In this very vivid depiction of the Colonel’s house and his surrounding it is shown that he lives in a life of constant threat. From the bars on his windows, to the lights in and around his house it shows the fear that he holds inside.From the glass on the floor and in the wall, to the pistol that remains next to him, to the ears that he keeps in a paper bag it is shown that he lives a life of violence as well. The Colonel is surrounded by all this fear and violence that it seems like that is all he knows. He was obviously previously served his time in the military because he is addressed as the Colonel, and also that violence is the only way to deal with a situation. Many people who serve the military become so engulfed in a vengeful way of doing things that they view that getting revenge and violence is the best way to handle a situation.Now that the Colonel ha s power over his land he resorts to revenge to get his point across to his people and through that justice is established (according to him). Forche reveals that, â€Å"He spilled many human ears on the table. † (Forche ll. 16) showing that when his people aren’t obeying is point of view he gets revenge, a â€Å"wild justice†, to keep is land in order. The Colonel is affirming what Bacon had stated, that revenge is a selfish act and it is done for one’s own profit, pleasure, or honor. The Colonel exclaims, â€Å"As for the rights of your people, tell them they can go fuck themselves,† (ll. 0-21) showing that his anger towards his people. It shows that the Colonel is focusing on his past because he seems to keep using revenge to try and obtain justice for those whom disobey him. The Colonel reveals that he isn’t that much of a wise person because if he were wise then he would not be focusing on things in the future, according to Bacon. So the Colonel, through Bacon’s eyes, is a vengeful person who will never be able to become a wise governing power, instead he dwells on the past and keeps wounds fresh through his acts of revenge.It is seen time and time again that revenge and bringing justice into one’s own hands becomes a spiraling vortex that may never end. If a person takes revenge then that person will most likely receive revenge as well, and this will keep on going back and forth and won’t ever stop. Just like in Forche’s poem, if revenged had stopped because for some strange reason the Colonel’s way worked then he would have a pistol by him, and bars on the windows. Revenge and Justice are one in the same. Leadership styles will influence the effectiveness of the change management process by recognizing and varying the style with the specific situation. The identification of when to give directions, times to empathize, times to use stretch goals, and times to involve subordinates in decision making will influence the effectiveness of the change management process under the guidance of specific leader. The Directive leadership style or task-oriented leadership is effective when clarification of performance goals, the means to reach the goals, and identification of the standards used to judge reaching the goals is need ed by the organization undergoing the change. The Supportive leadership style is effective when the need is for a leader that is understanding, approachable, friendly, and is able to guide the employees involved in organizational change through stressful situations while treating them with equal respect and showing concerns for their needs and well-being. The Participative leadership style is effective when employees undergoing change are motivated by involvement with the decisions beyond their normal work activities. The Achievement-oriented leadership style is effective when employees are motivated by encouragement to reach their peak performance and the leader shows a high degree of confidence in their ability to set and achieve change goals. Task structure, team dynamics, employee skill and experience, and locus of control are contingencies that will impact the effectiveness of the leaders impact on the change management process. During this phase, commitments are made to ensure that their dream will be realized. This takes huge commitment from individuals to comply with the action plans, small groups to work on collaboration efforts, and new teams that have been established for new projects. Since all these phases involve large number of employees and stakeholders, the likelihood that these action plans for changes will be accepted and implemented will be high. Appreciative inquiry focuses on what is right and do more of it rather than the traditional approach that focus on what is wrong and do less of it.
